Coney Island Top Gun

EPIX_03

About the best thing to rocket out of the 80′s was Tom Cruise strapped to the front of an F-14 dripping testosterone with his back seater “Goose” giving the enemy the “bird”. That movie still holds the record for the most cliche aviation quotes. In case you need to get up to speed you can check out IMDB here. “Tower, this is Ghost Rider requesting a flyby. Negative, Ghost Rider, the pattern is full”.

Once you’ve brushed up on quotes, you can go see Top Gun at  EPIX summer Movie Free-for-All event Monday, July 25th in Coney Island in New York! Nathan’s Hot Dogs and Top Gun, hell yea!

We’ve been offered media access, but the AirplanePorn crew will be touching down at Oshkosh 2011 that day. If you’re not headed to the big show and you’re in NYC, this is a must see for any “real” aviation nut!

Extra bonus points if you drag out your US Navy G-1 Leather Flight Jacket to watch the show in, just don’t wear shorts.  Negative bonus points for lathering up in baby oil and playing beach volley ball during the show (I always fast forward that section)!

You can also win VIP seats to the show. EPIX is also running a Twitter contest called Sweet Seats. Fans can enter to win VIP seats to select screenings by following @EpixHD on Twitter.  EPIX will announce on their Twitter handle when the contest begins for each movie, then all you have to do is tweet to @EpixHD with the hashtag #EPIXFFA as instructed to become eligible to win. http://epx.ms/rules0

We’re running our own AirplanePorn contest!  EPIX gave us three copies of TOP GUN to give away! To win, make sure you are following us on Twitter at @AirplanePorn. Then tweet us your favorite TOP GUN quote that you have actually used somewhere with the hashtag #APTOPGUN.

“Mav do you still have that number to that truck driving school?”

Making of the Movie “The Aviator”

Screen shot 2011-01-17 at 10.15.08 PM

Do you have that disease that I have? You know the one where you can’t just ENJOY a movie, you constantly trying to figure out “How did they do that?”.  Well even if your not terminal like Dilbert and I am, you’ll still get sucked into this website.

http://www.aviatorvfx.com is a behind the scenes look at how they made the movie “The Aviator” about the aviation icon Howard Hughes.   They go in detail, and I mean detail about the filming, post processing and special effects.

What’s really cool is the “miniature Fx” section that shows the scale models that were used in the making of the movie. Some were radio controlled.  Some were ground bound.  There ALL cool. So check em out.

I’ve got a good lead and will be brining you guys a video interview with one of the crew. So stay tuned, there’s more to come!
