Lego Space Shuttle Launches to Outer Space

Screen Shot 2012-04-29 at 8.22.44 AM

Well you would think the weight and aerodynamics of a space shuttle model made of Legos would prevent it from flying. These clever folks don’t care about that! They used a weather balloon and a GoPro Hero action cam to make this stunning video. This has to be the first time that a Lego space shuttle makes it to the troposphere unassisted by NASA or some other government sponsored fuel bill.

Can you imagine the calls to airliners through FL410? “left turn 210 degrees to keep you clear of the space shuttle” Ha!

You can read more about the project http://microblade.blogspot.com.au/2012/03/2001-brick-odyssey.html.

Apparently the U2 Sucks to Land

Screen Shot 2012-04-28 at 8.29.27 AM

When I was doing my CFI training you had to do spins.  The flight school only had one airplane that you could do spins in.  A Cessna 152. Needless to say I had to go with the smallest flight instructor they had.

He turned out to be really cool, and also a former U2 pilot in the air force.  I wonder if he’s in any of these shots?

With the large amount of ground effect, the SOB just doesn’t want to quit flying. Then given the long wingspan and shorter body length – when things get out of line it gets exponentially worse damn quick.

A friend of Francis Gary Powers said Gary told him:

I had an friend, who used to fly U-2′s and he told me that you had to fly the SOB all the way to the ground with very little excess airspeed and let it land itself by running our of lift. Basically just freeze the stick and hold it off at about 2 feet letting it settle as airspeed dissipated. (that’s the chase cars job – “OK 3 feet , 2feet, etc.)

I never really thought about it but it must really suck to land a jet-powered glider in a crosswind with mono-gear.

I think the video proves that!

AvPad: Best Kneeboard Yet

featured

I met Mike Ladd, maker of the AvPad (http://www.theavpad.com)at the aviation social media gathering at Oshkosh 2011. Sponsored by the good folks at Sennheiser Aviation (http://www.sennheiser-aviation.com), this event has become a favorite during Oshkosh. For a few hours all the bloggers and twitter’ers get to meet face to face and for once – interact in the real world. It’s also great to see real aviation companies supporting the growing aviation social media movement.

Mike’s product is ingeniously simple and solves two problems – holding your iPad (or iPad2) in the cockpit, and protecting it outside the cockpit. Cause if you have an iPad you HAVE to take it flying.  I think there is a law against leaving it at home.  Seriously.  He’s designed a tough as nails, simple kneeboard that holds your iPad.

Mike from AvPad gave me his newest model at Oshkosh 2011 to review for the site.  I was pretty stoked because I was looking at cover for my iPad2 anyway, and having one that was useful in the cockpit is even better.  I don’t go flying every day, but I do use my AvPad every day.  After having it for a while you will wonder how you lived with out it.  Cliche, I know.

“Fighter Pilot, And A Bastard”

dosgringos

I had the pleasure of having an old friend drop by last week.  By old, I mean we haven’t caught up since my wedding and it’s been too damned long kinda old.  We’ve kept in touch through Facebook and all, but sometimes that’s not really like old times.

You see Mark and I used to be roommates in college.  When the avgas was free (at least to us) and when we didn’t care that we actually had to pay back those student loans.  Mark went on to have a distinguished career as a Marine Helicopter Pilot, and I went on to well – write an aviation blog.

We were comparing cool aviation stuff that we had run into on the net. The iPad was blazing with all sorts of wings and things.

Then I asked him if the Marines drank Jeremiah Weed (http://www.jeremiahweed.com), which is a favorite of Air Force Fighter Pilots.

“Only Air Force Pukes Drink that crap” he replied.

Then he asked me if I had heard of Dos Gringos (http://www.dosgringosrocks.com).

“Dos Whoa?”

How To Be the Perfect R/C Wife

Screen Shot 2012-01-15 at 10.33.24 AM

So I think it’s gonna take a lot more than a video lesson for Mrs. Porn to be the perfect R/C Wife. But hay, it’s worth a shot!  This is a great little video with some good tips ton cleaning your airplane and winter time maintenance.

BTW how many folks in the AirplanePorn nation fly or want to fly R/C? Hit me up in the comments.

Hog Time

Screen shot 2011-11-02 at 11.18.08 PM

Just in case you were wondering, it’s been so long since I’ve posted anything that I almost forgot the login and password for the site. Almost.  Have no fear though. I’m back and will be posting at least weekly.  I’ve got some cool video segments coming up, including some awesome product reviews.

In the mean time, here is a video highlighting the need for hog control. These guys use a helicopter and a damned cool sighting system to get the advantage on the hogs.  Now before you start emailing me and getting on your whole PETA soapbox remember two things.  One, shooting hogs from helos is legal in Texas and two, they are not that cute. Especially if your a farmer, or a small kid playing in a field.

And don’t forget – there are other aviation bloggers who advocate the intake of certain pig products :)

Take that you dirty pigs! Oink, Oink!!! What now piggies!!! OHHH YEAA!!

Watch it in full screen mode for the full HD effect.  Enjoy 22 minutes of peaceful flying through Texas complete with Johnny Cash tunes!
